Are you new to sports videography and not sure where to start? Beyond the Game is a source of educational sports videography content giving you the tools and knowledge you need to create epic sports videos and ultimately achieve your dream of working alongside the athletes you idolize.
A little bit about me... After 6 years producing content for NHL, NBA, and UFC live events, I left it all behind me and decided to follow my heart and move to Australia for love. I still had a passion for sports videography though, so I quickly started learning as much as I could about Australian sports and the Australian sports industry. The next thing you know, I was producing video content for sport clubs, federations, leagues and promoters all over the country while documenting my journey on this channel.

Hey E - would you ever consider upgrading to an FX6?
Not really. I’m quite happy with what I have.
Was the camera tracking the ball when they were shooting hoops by itself? Awesome video btw
This was so informative and just the mindset we needed. Thank you 👏
Just got this field monitor off of your referral. Will be using it for Basketball.
Probably the best and quickest explanation on YT - of the benefits with using ND Filters
Thanks for saying that. Means a lot 😊
Do you think this would be a good choice for recording little league and youth football? Probably 2 hour recordings? Thx
Yes it is. As long as you use the right lens and have a spare battery.
Could i possible shot skiing videos in cold westher with a6400 or zv-e10? Or is the cold weather going to do damage to the camera?
I think you should be fine. The cold weather won’t affect the camera. But if you go indoors after being in the cold weather, expect to see fog in your lens until it gets acclimated.
are there any applications of something for the video quality?
Yes. The same one I’m using in this video.
With the vest being more centred in the chest area do you think the lav mic would be damaged easier being clipped there(for rugby)? Would you ever clip it to their collar area of the t shirt? Or any suggestions with where to put the lav mic for rugby game mic ups?
Anywhere you put it is somewhat of a gamble at the end of the day. I would think it would have a better chance of getting ripped off if attached to the collar.
Bro this video is too great for 67k views... This is INCREDIBLE 👏👏👏💯💯💯🐐🏆🏆🏆
Thank you!
i just bought your luts is there a tutorial on how to get it in premiere pro on a folder like yours. im getting annoyed having to hit browse everytime and then it open up files just for a filter i cant even preview
I don’t have a tutorial for this per say. But all you need to do, once you applied the LUT to a lumetri color effect, is right-click on this lumetri color effect in the effect controls panel and save it as a preset.
A lens and sensor cleaning kit is a must. There's nothing like having dust on your sensor, and you didn't notice until later.
Great recommendations!! Gotta check out that monitor!
I love it!
awesome
Thanks 😊
What's your favorite and most useful accessory?
What's the mic you're recording on?
Whenever I’m not using one of the wireless mics, I’m using a Rode NTG3 shotgun mic.
Hi E, great video , if I turn it off from Sony zve10 and my lenses also don’t have ibs, is there a difference if I were to stabilize inside of DaVinci instead of catalyst. Or it works best to stabilize in catalyst and then import media to DaVinci ?
Sorry, I don't use DaVinci so I have no idea how good the stabilization is. But I would assume that using the gyro data from the camera with Catalyst browse would be the best option.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you :)
How did u get that mist effec ?hallation or ur nd filter ?
I used a Polar Pro mist filter.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you
How are you pulling the stock footage from the game? for example if someone was pulling stock footage from a baseball game or for example the current european cup that ongoin in 2024?
Download it from youtube using a third-party app. Just Google youtube download to find one.
Amazing video, great tutorial
Thank you 😊
Smooth!!🔥
Thanks!
Great video, wouldn't have noticed the mist filter if you hadn't brought it up. Then again I wasn't looking for it.
Thanks 😊
monitor model? :D
Portkeys LH7P
I found one of these used for around 600$ usd on marketplace a few months ago and I jumped at it. I initially got it for a photography class at my university, but now that I have got into video, I’m super happy about its capabilities ESPECIALLY the 120fps at 1080p because I wasn’t even looking for that feature when I bought it. Now I’ve bought a nice Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 G2, the first gen Tamron 70-180m 2.8, a rode video mic, cage, side and top handle, and I have a v mount battery + external monitor on the way. Little worried about the overheating, especially since I will be shooting baseball, but still super happy with the investment so far.
Sounds like you're fully ready for baseball season!!
Put it on high temp mode and boom problem solved
Of course it was on high temp. I wish it was that simple!
Merci de partager tes connaissances et en plus tu le fais super bien!
Merci à toi!
Hi I am shooting with a SONY Z90 Format is XAVCH HD which can do 240 480 960 FPS what do I set up my editing setting to in PREMIERE PRO I dont when ever thing in slow mo thxs
24, 30 or 60fps are all good options. Your footage won't slow down automatically no matter what frame rate you use for the sequence. The only time footage is automatically slowed down in camera is when you film in S&Q mode.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I thnk thats the onkly way i can get those FPS in S&Q mode
@@ROBERTPOKONSKI In that case your footage is already slowed down in camera so the sequence frame rate won't change that, You'll have to speed up your clips if you want to play them at full speed.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thxs
Yes, the frustration my high school sports media students have with using our ZHIYUN is the type of lens to use with our Canon or Sony cameras. The lenses we have are too heavy because their high quality. However, we’re going to try renting a 35mm prime and see how it works. Love this style of filming. Thank you😸
Track artist name?
OMG by Vic Sage
Have you ever got a copyright strike?
No. But I got a warning for making a video explaining how to download content from UA-cam.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Okay, thank you. Great content btw.
I bought the Sony Handyman for basketball use, now I'm back watching your video lol.
A second camera angle can’t hurt!
Thanks for the review E. I actually like the mist...maybe a slight bit less intense, but it really doesn't bother me. I also love the crowd react shots...they look great and I think the 35mm perspective is superb. I shoot a lot of primes with my sports because I am doing mostly preps since I switch from stills to video often during games. Also, the FX3 has the ability to use Clear Image zoom rocker and it works well and can give you some of the benefits of the zoom without the zoom. And speaking of the zoom, you might check out the 20-70 f4 G ..it's a small and light one that works well on these mini types of gimbals and at a fixed aperture of f4 throughout the range it can be a nice way to change focal lengths quickly without the bulk of the 35-150 or 70-200. One thing I did a lot this past season was put a 20mm or the 20-70 on my gimbal and then keep it aimed at the basket as a bit of a safety angle (angled up and just positioned on the floor near me) and then I could gimbal pre game and intros. The other camera I used was typically the 135 1.8 on the a1 so I could shoot stills and video. I would set the dial so that the stills had my 1/1250 th at f1.8 settings locked in and then the video dial was set for 1/125th at same aperture for 60P video. Occasionally I would have a third body for handheld wide angle front court (like the 35 1.4) using the Peak Design leash to help stabilize.
Thank you for your feedback and all your great suggestions. I'll try to use the clear image zoom next time for sure!
Does anyone know if background blur/bokeh will be affected???
Affected by what?
@@BeyondTheGame_E EFCS
@@aspilobo what’s that?
How do you focus? Manual or auto?
A bit of both but probably more auto.
Using the gimbal's Go mode might help for sports. Were you using POV mode or did you also use Pan Follow or Follow mode? The ability to do underslung mode is great especially when players are running. Can you access Sony Clear Image Zoom? That might give you some zoom control. BTW I love the mist filter. The softer glowing lights are less distracting than harsh points.
Thanks for the feedback! I was using the PF mode pretty much the entire time. I'll have to try the Go mode next time for sure though. And yes, you are right, I could have used clear image zoom to change my framing from time to time.
Great vid E!
Thanks!🙏🏽
when there is written 30 minutes of recording time, does it mean that it was one 30 minute video that was filmed which caused it to overheat ?
Not necessarily. Like I said in the video, if you record 30 minutes of content 1-2 minutes at a time, your camera will overheat.
what mist filter and strength did you use? i think it looks great btw.
Thanks! It’s a Polar Pro Quartzline Mist filter. It’s roughly 1/4 strength.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I bet 1/8th would look just perfect!
@@paulgero You're probably right!
Have you ever used a Cine Saddle?
No I never have.
Good quality content as usual. Your footage looks sooo good!
Thank you!
what camera do you use to film?
A Sony FX3
@@BeyondTheGame_E I’m on a Sony a7ii currently and was thinking about going to that for the video how good is it for photos aswell
@@hain5956 It's definitely made for video first so it's more than good enough for my photo needs but it just depends on your needs and expectations.
@@BeyondTheGame_E i mostly do still photography with like cars and such, do most of my stuff in post and some sports photography but ill probably shoot video if it has to do with motion. after seeing the comparison photo wise it should be fine with the photos I take. thank you for responding btw ur a real one!
With a zoom lens, balance the gimbal for the focal length at the center of the zoom range. Ex approx 50mm on a 24-70. Also flip out your lcd screen before balancing.
Thanks, I’ll test that next time for sure.
These videos are absolute gems. Thanks for these - I work in sports broadcasting and have yearned to be a videographer and have that creative freedom. This is literally the perfect video as I plan on upgrading from my a6400 to a dedicated videography camera.
Glad to be of service! What do you do in sports broadcasting if you don’t mind me asking?
@@BeyondTheGame_E I work for the Portland Sea Dogs baseball team (AA affil. of the Boston Red Sox). I started out as a camera operator, and now I am directing for the MiLB and MLB channels since graduating with my bach's in May. It's a sweet gig, but I miss being close to the action and on the field. The skills of broadcast camera operating don't entirely translate to what you and many other creative-focused people do, so thats my goal. Being a videographer for a major league team or in boxing/martial arts is the dream.
Sounds like you’re on the right path!
Great video and reel as always! I shot an ice hockey match using the Weebill S and Lumix GH5s and found the 'go' mode so good, you have to hold down the 'fn' button, it's so reactive - you should try it, if you haven't already. I rarely use the camera handheld because the lack of IBIS, I used a monopod on the day too. Quick question, I know you do a lot of motion tracking stuff in post and shoot 4K and edit in HD for flexibility, do you think this is still an option after shooting on a gimbal?
Yes I do. But I still export my videos in 4K by the way, not HD.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Oh right. But if you have punched in to avoid loss in resolution, using a 1080p timeline and then export in 4K does that not affect anything or am I misunderstanding?
@@PaulRandles-editspace201 I film in 4K, edit in 4K, and export in 4K. I don't really punch in much. I just film from various angles, zoom in and zoom out, and use the footage in its original form. But if I do punch in a little sometimes (like 10 to 30%), it is rarely noticeable.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Oh right okay cool, I asked about motion tracking originally using a HD timeline with 4K footage - just thought it would be a good option when filming on a gimbal especially on a wider lens. Thanks again for getting back to me!
@@PaulRandles-editspace201 You're right, it is a good option 👍🏽
What camera was this? FX30 or FX3?
Sony FX3
You could have used a Sony power zoom lens. That's what I use with my Ronin 4, works great.
True! I don't have one though. Plus, it would have to be an internal zoom otherwise the balancing gets thrown off every time the lens grows or shrinks.
@@BeyondTheGame_E The two PZ lens I have are internal zoom and I am using it with my Ronin 4. Does not throw off the balance at all.
@@EVOlutionHTC4g Sounds like a great setup!
What if UA-cam didnt want people to see this and they copyrighted this video😂
UA-cam has blocked a couple other videos I made in the past around similar topics.
@@BeyondTheGame_E lol
Hey thank you ! Also there is SWISSTRANSFER until 50gb files for free/no suscriptions. What is your render settings ? File format ? Yours videos are so great, helpful for many styles of videos, thank you so much
Very helpful! 😮
Glad you think so!
I think a mix of dynamic gimbal shots and fast paced hand held shots would be a perfect mix 👌🏼
Good call!
